The EYP Team in Gothenburg Sweden over the weekend had a good time, when they visited the Amusement Park. They had fun. The coaches are the only ones who did not get on the Entertainment Machines like water boats, space trains, swings and mind teasing games. We are sure the youthful players have a lot to tell about this amusement park! When coach Makanga Peter communicated, he joked that the weekend may have registered the highest number of smiles from his team....

All parents received a final briefing on the trip of their children to Sweden on the 8th July 2008. Tournament secretariat in Sweden assured us that the children would be served varied and nutricious meals. And temperature can cool down considerably! Final conclusion: the team is all set for departure!

The Travel Team Leader Coach Peter Makanga reported that all players were in good shape and in good mood just before boarding SN Brussels on the 11th July. The delegation consisted of 18 players and 2 officials. Carol Nakanjako was the team Coordinator / Parental Guide.

Before Leaving the Team was given an Official Send Off at Aga Khan Field by the Parents, Aga Khan Community and EYP Coaches. Madam Margaret Bell was the Chief Guest at the Send Off Ceremony and she advised the team to keep discipline and togetherness while in Sweden.

The team arrived safely (with luggage), without delays in Sweden the following day, to enjoy a day of rest, before the attending the Opening Ceremony and the start of the matches on Monday 14.

The U11 team that went to Sweden underwent a light training under Coach Peter Makanga. The Mood was good and all seems to be going on well. Travel Team Coordinator Carol Nakanjako said the major theme of the trip had been already achieved as the youthful players have already experienced new lessons on how professional players behave in Europe. The Bus in which the team moves has been first class and all activities were done on time.

Surprising to the team was the idea of going to sleep at 9pm when the sun was still up in the sky! The Sun is always set and darkness is always there by 7pm in Uganda, throughout the Year.

Edgars Youth Program U11 travel team has the 14th played their first match. The team narrowly lost to Lerum team (from Sweden) by 2 to 1 after conceeding a goal in the closing minutes. Although the team played well, it missed two penalties and lost concentration in the last minutes. Must have been the excitement taking over!

The players of the EYP travel team are enjoying themselves with new friends from Lerum. Attending the Opening Ceremony in the main stadium was a very special occasion! All players are in good condition, having fun and learning from their counterparts in Sweden.

Coach Makanga when contacted, said that the aim of making this trip had already been achieved since all players had already got new friends, learnt new tactics and have a ot to share with their colleagues in Uganda. Carol Nakanjako, the Team Guide, also added that EYP had already got more contacts and experience that can be used for future travel teams.

Yesterday Edgars Team again lost in the play off by 4 to 1 from the Swedisch Brommapojkarna 2. Coach Makanga when contacted said the team lost due to inexperience. The third match against the Canadians ended in a loss as well

The 4th play-off match was the final match of our U12 boys – the 2 EYP goals were not enough to assure a win - the Swedish team Backen won 4-2. The Boys 11 finals were won by the German KFV Segeberg who beat the Hungarian team with 3-1.
Edgars Youth Programme Team in
Sweden have successfully – without serious injuries - ended their Gothia games and have received a play off Trophy.

If you want to read more about the Gothia Cup tournament: check out their website.
After the hard work, the Edgars U11 team in
Sweden had a chance to move out to the shopping areas. The team was divided into two shopping shifts in order to have proper control. Coach Peter Makanga escorted them to the shops and each one had chance not only to buy but also to see the township. You can be assured that the team has lots of stories to tell their families when they return home!

Asked whether the team had been affected by the lost games,Carol Nakanjako said that it was more on the field but off the field the players are having a ball.

All in all, it has been an excellent experience for the young players both in terms of soccer skills as fair play, and they are ready to come back next year!  The team will return on 23.07.08.
