Soccer and Development

Sports help the youth to understand their potential and learn better how they can improve the communities they live in. Being active in sports helps you live a healthier life and how you can avoid injuries. Moreover, it promotes communication and helps heal the divisions between peoples, communities and entire nations. And last, but not least set an example for fair play.

So soccer is not just entertainment, but a tool for development as well.

Since the introduction of UPE, sports and PE have lost terrain in schools. Lesser is attention given to sports, unfortunately it is too often seen as a pass-time activity, whereas it can help a child develop its social skills. Access to sports is for vulnerable Ugandans such are orphans, disabled, war-affected or HIV+ even more limited. Because of their situation they are often socially isolated. Sports can help them. Yet, special needs education is insufficient, or lacks the necessary learning facilities.

Edgars Youth Programme participated in a stakeholders workshop organised by the Ministry of Education and Sports. MoES intends to intensify the sports/PE education within the schools, and wanted to consult stakeholders on related issue. Lack of sports facilities and coaching skills was mentioned as one of the challenges for schools. EYP is hopeful that this initiative will get proper follow-up, so that the Ugandan youth can benefit more and better from sports!

FIFA and UN cooperate to further advocate for the role of sports as a effective tool for development and peace.. more..

To give back, the EYP coaches have implemented several soccer for development projects, targeting amongst others the deaf youth, the youngsters of the Naguru Remand Home for juveniles, the kids in the Gulu Uyama IDP, other war-affected children and Kampala street kids. And since we are registered as a nationwide NGO, we can reach the entire country. Thanks to sponsoring sport equipment could be purchased for the targeted groups.

EYP has so far organized and managed:

  • The Hutter cup in Northern Uganda (2005) - funded by Madam Hutter
  • Soccer project for the Naguru Remand Home for juveniles (2005), funded by Horizont 3000
  • ‘Soccer for Development’  project in Gulu Uyama IDP camp (2006) supported by Germany Embassy, and
  • A self sponsored street star programme in Naguru to sensitize Kampala street children about drugs and HIV/Aids.

Currently the 2008 Deaf League is ongoing, which is organized with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kampala. We intend to set up in partnership with 8 Deaf schools a soccer training programme and train the game teachers. The schools have received sports equipment. We expect that approx. 600 deaf boys and girls will participate activitely in the upcoming events, but in the long term the schools should be able to continue soccer practice on their own.

If you want to more about this activity, you are referred to ‘ Deaf League’ .
